The Attack of the Pub Culture

The way these politicians are going on about pub culture and how it not part of Indian ethos and culture, one would think that Indians grew up drinking milk and water.

The latest politician to join the anti-pub culture bandwagon is Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, who believes that pubs are to be blamed for increased in number of drink driving accidents involving youngsters. How about blaming parents who are giving their cars to these youngsters? Of course not. Parents are holy and western influence is to be blamed for all the ills in Indian society.

I would like to pose a question to all politicians who are against pubs in India -- have you never visited a pub? Where were your so-called Indian principles and ethose when you were drinking in pubs with you bodyguards to protect unwanted intrusions?

Drinking has been part of the Indian culture for centuries. Why do you think the British Empire found it so easy to conquer India? The rulers of the Indian princely states were interested only in drinking and fornicating. Once the British found this out, they gave the rulers enough incentives to continue these two vices provided they handover the running of the state to the British Empire.

I wonder what else the politicians are going to blame for deteriorating social circumstances. If they did what they were elected for rather than filling their coffers, we wouldn't have a decadent society where everyone else gets blamed for the politicians' incompetence.

The Indian Tamils React to Sri Lankan Offensive

I was just watching the news and the big headline story was about a Tamil journalist who burned himself in protest. He was protesting against the treatment of Tamils in Sri Lanka. This happen a few days ago and now he is proclaimed a martyr.

It is quite easy to become a martyr in India. You just need to kill yourself for a stupid cause in front of an enraged mob, and it should be an election year.

I find it so hypocritical of Indian Tamils who are protesting against the treatment of Sri Lankan Tamils. Come on destroying the Bank of Ceylon is not the answer. Yes, you have a right to protest about the treatment of fellow human beings but where were these people when North Indians were being persecuted in Mumbai?

The members from Maharashtra's Nav Nirman Sena were mercilessly beating North Indians, mostly migrant workers from Bihar, and entire India watched the scenes on television quietly. No one protested and no action was taken against this Hindu fundamentalist group.

Aren't North Indians and Biharis Indians? Don't they have the right to move from one city to another looking for better opportunities?

Why not first create a better India for the Indians before protesting about the treatment of people in another country?

The answer is very simple -- politicians know that 2009 is an election year. They will do just about anything to win votes and if targeting North Indians and Bank of Ceylon can do the trick, why bother to change the horrible and miserable lives of a majority?

I hang my head in shame at the Indian hypocrisy. There seems no end to it. When you cannot treat your own citizens with respect, how can you interfer in another country's internal matter. Has India forgotten that she gave LTTE emotional and financial support just a few decades ago?

Indians, you should be ashamed at yourselves.

Talibanizing of India - The Mangalore Pub Attack

Although I profess that I have not spent many years in India but I'm appalled at what's occurring in this country. True I'm an Indian and I love India as much as the next person, without trying to sound overly patriotic. After all it is the country of by birth. But I doubt this will be the country where my son will grow up or where my remains will be interred.

The recent event in the South Indian state of Karnataka has left me flummoxed. I just don't know how to react. Suddenly fundamental organizations and politicians have taken it upon themselves to stop the so-called "pub culture" in India. And their methods -- molesting and hitting young girls frequenting pubs.

They opine that their methods may be wrong but people need to look at the bigger picture -- stopping our sisters and mothers from getting corrupted by western influences. Indian women should not go to pubs, should not have boyfriends and should be seen with men who are not their husbands!

This is a laugh. It is a joke. Come on India faces bigger challenges than women going to pubs and drinking. I drink and smoke. So, does that mean I am a whore? I think people, especially Indian women, should not take this mindless attitude of few men who are suffering from serious psychological problems.

Do these saviors of Indian women think that by molesting and manhandling women, they are earning kudos? What right do they have to decide what I should do and not do? If this is going to the done thing, then aren't we retrogressing?

India is a country where women used to be respected and treated with dignity. However, this is now all in the past. Any man who thinks that he does not like a woman's behavior can just about do anything. At least that is what has come out from the recent Mangalore incident, which has blessings of politicians.

I used to think that the Talibans were bad. Now I'm wondering whether the Hindu fundamentalists are worse? India is a democracy and we have the right to do what we choose to do -- be it drinking, fornicating, smoking or pimping. The law of the land has to judge us and not some fools, who claim that they are here to stop the corruption of Indian women.

This is nothing but Talibanizing of India. Indian women rise and fight for your rights. You cannot let some archiac thinking stop your progress.
